The neighborhood of Bloomingdale, located less that 2-miles directly north of the Capitol Building is a fun, hip and eclectic community to live in. One of the reasons Bloomingdale is so attractive is its wide variety of great restaurants, cafes, bars and coffee shops.
No matter what you’re in the mood for, you’ll be sure to find something satisfying just a few steps away. Here are some of our favorites:
Big Bear Cafe
On the south end of 1st Street you’ll find Big Bear Cafe, a popular spot for locals to grab a cup of coffee and start their day. The breakfast menu is served until 3 p.m.and the late-day menu from noon until close.
Big Bear also hosts special events, including movie nights, bluegrass, comedy and community discussions.
If you’re looking for a place to host an event there is a lovely Garden Patio and indoor dining area that make the perfect setting for weddings, birthday dinners, wedding or baby showers, or any event you’re looking to pull together. Or if you need a bigger space, you can reserve the entire second floor.

The Red Hen
Located on the corner of 1st Street and Seaton Pl, this Italian-influenced American restaurant is an incredibly popular dinner destination. The Red Hen features seasonal and creative wood-fired Italian eats in an airy, rustic-industrial space with open kitchen & large bar. A custom wood-fired grill is the focal point of the kitchen, with many dishes passing through the hearth. The Red Hen also features a surprisingly affordable and eclectic wine list with a strong focus on wines from Northern Italy, Germany, Austria and Burgundy.
Reservations are recommended for this generally packed restaurant.

Boundry Stone Public House
Boundry Stone is a classic neighborhood pub known for its warm, welcoming environment, delicious food, eclectic beer menu and whiskey! If you’re a whiskey connoisseur you’ll find dozens of options distilled in places from Alabama to Scotland (of course!) to Japan. The regular menu is on the upper-end of standard pub fare, but there is also a delightful Brunch Menu served Saturdays, Sundays and Monday Holidays. Keep an eye out for the Bottomless Bloody Marys and Mimosas.
Monday nights at Boundry Stone you’ll find Open Mic Night, and every Tuesdays is an event called District Trivia.
There are four different areas, including a patio, available for private events, and if you really need to you can reserve the entire pub!

If you’re in a wine mood you’ll certainly enjoy Bloomington’s best bistro, Tyber Creek Wine Bar & Kitchen. Regularly voted among DC’s best Wine Bars, Tyber Creek has a family-friendly atmosphere where you can enjoy the wood-fired lunch and dinner offerings. Along with the splendid wine menu, which includes wines from Georgia, is a rather intriguing array of local craft brews on tap.
The dining room is bright and airy with a bit of an upscale-cafe feel to it, but the highlight is the outdoor patio, and when the weather is nice there no better place in Bloomingdale to enjoy a glass of wine.

Opened in 2012, Aroi Thai Restaurant and Sushi Bar is the place to go if you’re looking for a treat from the Far-East. Aroi serves wonderful Thai entrees & noodles along with Japanese sushi. Along with the modern, richly colored dining room Aroi also offers take-out and delivery.

Located in the center of Bloomingdale, Bacio Pizzeria is an upscale, artisan pizzeria that features hand-tossed pies with local, organic ingredients and fresh dough made with the finest quality flour, extra virgin olive oil and clear-filtered water. Bacio also offers a gluten-free crust option. In addition to pizza there is a variety of calzones, salads and delicious desserts. The atmosphere is charming and there is a nice, “snug” patio for outside dining.

In the southeast corner of Bloomindale you’ll find The Pub & The People, a surprising gastropub that was voted Best Neighborhood Bar in Washington DC in 2019. Some of the other surprises include a heated, dog-friendly holiday tent in the winter, and an urban microgreen farm in the basement which supplies fresh herbs and greens for the kitchen.
